Colorblind vs. Technicolor: Interrogating the Kitchen Space in Kathryn Stockett's "The Help"

Abstract

Kathryn Stockett‘s novel The Help has been criticized for its petty attempt to portray the truth of white and black women in Jackson, Mississippi in 1960. While Stockett‘s decision of controversial dialect may gloss over the bigger racial questions and issues within 1960‘s Jackson, the inclusion of food and the conversations enabled around food allows readers to experience the complexities within Southern racism.
