Abstract

The 21st century continues to be an ever-changing era of both promise and uncertainty. Burgeoning globalization and rapidly advancing technology promise improvement for the lives of many as well as the advancement of civilization as a whole. Yet let it not be forgotten that this century was born in the fires of 9/11 and the subsequent wars it has propagated. Terrorism and piracy remain powerful threats, and the growing power of nations such as China, Brazil, and India are sure to upset the current international balĀance of power in the not-so-distant future. It is time for the United States to adopt a defense capable of dealing with the threats of the modern world.
