Human Trafficking in the Russian Federation

Abstract

The Russian Federation is a major source, point of transit, and destination for human trafficking. Human trafficking in Russia is a multifaceted problem; forced labor, prostitution, child sex tour­ism, and forced begging are abundant.[1] To date, the current efforts, laws, and programs in place to combat human trafficking within the Russian Federation are inadequate due to the scale of the problem, a lack of coordination, and the role of corruption within the country. The laws that have been passed have yet to be fully enforced. Russia, placed on the Tier 2 Watch List by the United States Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report 2010, has not fully complied and implemented suggested strategies of victim assistance, shelter, and rehabilitation.
